When we go through a rough patch in life, be it something personal or a
paintbrush with a broader stroke — like the economic crisis we're currently
experiencing — it is only human nature to return to what we know: Our
comfort zone.
When my son, Theo, was two, I took him trick-or-treating at a nearby
recreation center. It was a gorgeous, sunny, warm late October afternoon and
as we waited in line, ghosts and goblins scurried about. Theo, dressed in a
bumblebee suit with oversized wings, stared wide-eyed at the older kids
donning scary masks and wielding plastic swords. Though at moments he dared
to venture a few steps from my side, his curiosity piqued, he would then
quickly dash back to his comfort zone — me — placing his tiny hand in mine.
A Valuable Tool
As grown-ups, we rarely exhibit our fear of the unknown as openly and
honestly as we did as kids. Yet, the return to our comfort zones is a
valuable tool when we're facing uncertainty.
