Free Update to Toolkit 6 Released

Toolkit 6.4 has been released. This is a free update for all owners of version 6 of Toolkit. The next time you start the program, it will let you know that an update is available; follow the prompts to download and install the update.

Among the changes in this version are a revamped Average Future Yield in Section 5 that displays the underlying values used in the calculation of both potential future yield and projected average yield. This should clear up some of the confusion around this section since it was modified in version 6.

Toolkit now offers a User Preference to enable BetterInvesting terminology in key forms and locations throughout the program (the primary analysis form would be labeled "Stock Selection Guide" instead of "Stock Study," for instance).

For those users who don't use the Roster of Quality Companies as a regular source of new stock ideas, the Portfolio section of the Library now retains the most recently accessed portfolio and displays it at the top of the dropdown list.

In Section 3, we now display the actual calculated values for Price/Earnings Ratio, Relative Value, and Projected Relative Value with strikeouts if you remove any high or low P/E Ratios as outliers in the table. This way you can continue to note the actual historical valuation level as well as the values you decide on as more reasonable given the company's current situation.

We also display the average of the Trailing Twelve Months (TTM) and Forward Twelve Months (FTM) EPS in the Section 3 table. This is sometimes used for a projected low EPS figure in Section 4B(a).

The new Portfolio Diversification Reports can now be printed, as well.

For a complete list of the 30 or so changes in version 6.4, please see the Release Notes.

Investor Advisory Service Named to 2011 Investment Newsletter Honor Roll
by Doug Gerlach

For the second consecutive year, our monthly investment newsletter, the Investor Advisory Service, has been named to the Hulbert Financial Digest 2011 Investment Newsletter Honor Roll.

There are only six newsletters included in this year's honors, so this is indeed a prestigious list. To be included on the Investment Newsletter Honor Roll, newsletters must show above-average performance, on a risk-adjusted basis, in both up and down markets over the past twelve years. This is a remarkable achievement for any financial professional or publication. As Hulbert notes, one of the top-performing newsletters of 2009 was one of the worst-performing newsletters of 2010. Investors who chase returns from "hot" newsletters probably won't earn the level of returns they may expect, since these don't usually offer consistent returns. However, as Hulbert shows, a newsletter with slow and steady results like IAS can outperform the market on a regular basis, and this is a laudable accomplishment: if the returns of all newsletters were distributed randomly, many more should be able to post the kind of returns that IAS has earned for subscribers. The fact that only a few newsletters make the list demonstrates that it really "means something."

The Investor Advisory Service has been eligible for this accolade for only two years because Hulbert began tracking the Service in 1998, so we're two for two. Even better, of the fund and equity newsletters named to the 2011 Investment Newsletter Honor Roll, the IAS posted the second-best performance in "Annualized Gain of Domestic Equity Portfolios" since June 30, 1998 (we missed the top spot by one-tenth of a percent!). We ranked third in "Grade in Up Markets" during the same period.
