What Do the Stock Market's Recent Advances Mean?

The stock market's recent advances to all-time highs are giving some investors the jitters. Are these trends sustainable? When is the right time to buy in this kind of market?

Analysts for the Investor Advisory Service are watching the latest trends carefully to weigh the reasons stocks have been riding high. They include prospects for economic growth, the effect of Federal Reserve policy and how the behavior of individuals affects the market.

The U.S. economy's signals continue to be mixed, with weak GDP persisting and not much to write home about in the jobs picture. The housing market is steadily improving, however, with existing-home prices rising in most markets and foreclosures and short sales continuing to wash out of the system. As long as Fed policies seem to be keeping interest rates low, consumers feel more confident about big-ticket purchases.

What role have individual investors played in this year's stock market advance? In the latest issue of IAS, the analysts looked at the flow of new money into stock mutual funds compared with the march of dollars out of bond funds. Subscribers receive these insights along with three stocks of interest in every issue of IAS.

Experts, Investors to Gather at BetterInvesting National Convention

The 62nd annual BetterInvesting National Convention (BINC) — the organization's premier educational event — is slated for Sept. 19-22 in Pittsburgh. Don't miss this event, which brings many of the nation's top investing experts and gurus together for a four-day, action-packed event. Designed to inspire and inform investors, the convention offers an unparalleled opportunity to learn from pros and exchange ideas with others, including getting firsthand information from representatives of prospective companies for investment. This is a rare chance to meet the CEOs and executives of companies that may one day form part of your portfolio.

The networking possibilities are exciting, but another major draw at BINC are the keynote speeches from investment industry luminaries. Ron Muhlenkamp, founder of the independent investing firm Muhlenkamp & Company, will share fresh insights including the significance of natural gas in investing. Muhlenkamp is a popular commentator and recently appeared on CNBC's "Closing Bell Exchange" program. SEC Commissioner Elisse Walter also will deliver a keynote speech. Click here to reserve your spot at BINC.

Now on MyStockProspector: Reviewing Recent Quarterly Growth

MyStockProspector is one of the most powerful fundamental stock screeners available, and we're eager to let you know when new capabilities are available.

The latest refinement to MyStockProspector is the Reviewing Recent Quarterly Growth feature. On the Quick View Graph that you can access from any screen results page, we've added points that represent a company's recent quarterly updates.

For any quarters that ended since the company announced results from its last fiscal year, points now appear in the current year for sales and EPS. These represent the trailing 12 months' results and give you a quick visual check on the current progress the company is making. Often, a company can appear undervalued on the basis of its historical annual growth — but upon further investigation, recent quarters show good cause for the price to have fallen.

Subscribers already familiar with our Toolkit 6 program may recognize this is the same technique we use on the stock study graph to represent recent results.
