Portfolio Defense Report

The Portfolio Defense report is intended to highlight stock in the portfolio whose fundamentals (Sales, Earnings, and Pre-tax Profit) are deteriorating.

Portfolio Defense Description

The Portfolio Defense Report is divided up into several sections, and sub-sections. Unless otherswise noted below, all data comes from linked stock studies created by club members:

  • Company, Ticker, and Qtr End – These three columns show the name, ticker symbol and latest quarter of data we have available.
  • Sales – Shows figures primarily related to the Sales figures for the security.
    • % ACE Growth (ACE Stands for Analysts’ Consensus Estimate) shows the forecast growth in sales for the stock as reported by Morningstar.com
      • If this column is zero or N/A, it means the Morningstar data did not include an analyst estimate for that security.
    • % Est Growth shows the estimated sales growth.
    • % Chg Sales – Compares the most recent quarter to the same quarter one year ago, and the Trailing Twelve months figure to the same figure one year earlier. In both cases, the column shows the percent change between the two times. Subtracts the old figure from the new, then divides by the old, and shows the result as a percentage.
    • % Difference Sales – Looks at the most recent quarter to the same quarter one year ago, and the Trailing Twelve months figure to the same figure one year earlier, then compares them to your projected Sales estimation. The figure in this column is the difference between the historical growth, and your projection.

  • Pre-Tax Profit – Shows figures primarily related to the Pre-Tax Profit figures for the security.
    • % ACE Growth (ACE Stands for Analysts’ Consensus Estimate) shows the forecast growth in Pre-tax profit for the stock as reported by Morningstar.com
      • If this column is zero or N/A, it means the Morningstar data did not include an analyst estimate for that security.
    • % Est EPS Growth shows the estimated EPS growth.
    • % Chg PTP – Compares the most recent quarter to the same quarter one year ago, and the Trailing Twelve months figure to the same figure one year earlier. In both cases, the column shows the percent change between the two times. Subtracts the old figure from the new, then divides by the old, and shows the result as a percentage.
    • % Difference PTP– Looks at the most recent quarter to the same quarter one year ago, and the Trailing Twelve months figure to the same figure one year earlier, then compares them to your projected EPS estimation. The figure in this column is the difference between the historical growth, and your projection.
      • We use the EPS estimate here, with the idea that PTP should track EPS, with major differences only coming with a change in shares outstanding or taxes.

  • EPS – Shows figures primarily related to the Earnings Per Share for the security.
    • % Chg EPS – Compares the most recent quarter to the same quarter one year ago, and the Trailing Twelve months figure to the same figure one year earlier. In both cases, the column shows the percent change between the two times. Subtracts the old figure from the new, then divides by the old, and shows the result as a percentage.
    • % Difference EPS – Looks at the most recent quarter to the same quarter one year ago, and the Trailing Twelve months figure to the same figure one year earlier, then compares them to your projected EPS estimation. The figure in this column is the difference between the historical growth, and your projection.
