Moving Toolkit information or database from one working copy to another

Note: The steps below do not keep the library files current between the two copies, but simply create a copy that can be moved between computers. For members that are comfortable using outside software, we have information on how to set up a shared library using a cloud drive, or another sharing system. The FAQ on this is at:

Moving Your Toolkit information from one computer to another requires a few general steps:

  • Backing up your data on the primary computer
  • Installing Toolkit on the secondary computer (if it is not already there)
  • Restoring your backed-up data
  • Entering your subscription information again

Backing up your data

Note: These steps assume you have a working copy of Toolkit. If that is not the case, please see our FAQ on manually transferring data at:
https://www.iclub.com/faq/Home/Article?id=240.

  1. Open Toolkit and click on Options > Database Utilities.
  2. Select the first option, to make a backup of your database
  3. Select C:: -Fixed from the drop-down menu, and click OK.
  4. From the list of places, select the drive that you want to make the backup to. If you are using a removable drive, and aren't sure which letter it is, unplug the drive for a few seconds, and then plug it back in. When unplugged, one of the listed drives should disappear after a few seconds, and then re-appear when the drive is plugged back in.
  5. Click OK
  6. Toolkit should report that the database was backed up. Click OK
  7. You can now remove the drive or floppy disk from the computer.

Before closing Toolkit, make sure to go to the Help menu, and Choose About Toolkit. Copy down your serial number; you will need to use this to register the program on the new computer.

Installing Toolkit on the second computer

Note: If Toolkit is already installed on the second computer, you DO NOT need to remove it; simply skip down to the section on restoring data.

  1. In your web browser, go to https://www.iclub.com/support/downloads.asp
  2. Click on DOWNLOAD next to the TOOLKIT 6 icon, and then Download again on the following page.
  3. Choose SAVE or SAVE FILE if the browser asks what to do with the file
If your browser asks where to save the file, we suggest to choose desktop.
  4. Depending on your browser, you may be given the option to run the file as soon as it is done downloading. If so, go ahead and do so. If not, hold down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, and tap the letter J to bring up the list of downloaded files.
  5. Double-click on the Toolkit6Setup
  6. Follow the on-screen installation instructions.

Restoring your backed-up data

  1. Insert the drive or floppy disk into the secondary computer.
  2. Open Toolkit and click on Options > Database Utilities.
  3. Select the second option, to restore a backup of your database
  4. Select C:: -Fixed from the drop-down menu, and click OK.
  5. On the window that opens, choose the drive letter for the floppy or removable drive. As before, if you have a removable drive and are not sure of the letter, unplug it for a minute, then plug it back in and note which letter appears on the list.
  6. Find the file named TK or TK.itb, and click on the file to select it. Click OK or OPEN
  7. A message will appear asking to confirm that you want to over-write the database that Toolkit is currently using; click YES
  8. A message will appear asking if you want to over-write the URL database that Toolkit is currently using; click YES
  9. Toolkit should report that the database was restored. Click OK.

Entering your subscription information again

(This is only required if you have not already entered the information in the secondary copy of Toolkit)

  1. Open Toolkit and select Preferences from the Options menu
  2. Enter your login and password information for StockCentral or BetterInvesting
These aren't the same subscription, and most members will have one or the other, so you won't necessarily need to fill in both sets of boxes.
  3. If you aren't sure what these are, contact whoever you have the subscription with:
