There sure is a lot of finger-pointing going on these days. So much, in fact, that I've felt the need to begin putting it into categories, just so I can keep it all straight. There’s Partisan Finger-Pointing, wherein the Democrats blame the Republicans – and vice versa. There’s Stranger Finger-Pointing, defined as the nameless, faceless people calling in to radio talk shows to blame the other nameless, faceless people for the mess we're in. After all, they argue, if those other people hadn't taken out home loans they couldn’t afford in the first place, we wouldn't be here. And there’s Personal Finger-Pointing, characterized by the process of taking a good, hard look in the mirror and admitting that part of the problem could be, well, you.
Yes, I know that last one's hard to swallow. But it's in tough times like these that people's nerves fray to the point where the uninhibited truth comes rolling off of their tongues. Case in point: An article by personal finance guru Liz Pulliam Weston that appeared on the MSN.com website titled Money trouble? It's your own fault. That cuts right to the chase, doesn't it? After I got over the initial shock of the headline and into the meat of the article, I realized that Liz made some pretty good points – and provided some food for thought.
Grassroots change
Even if you are a member of that group known as Responsible Individuals – the ones who live within their means and maximize their retirement and investment club contributions – there's always room for improvement.
