It's the question that's on the tip of your tongue – the one you want to ask, the one that feels awkward. And you don't know if it's your place. After all, the person doing the job volunteered to do it, it's a lot of work and certainly he or she knows the ins and outs better than you. Who are you ask the question?
The job is the office of Club Treasurer. The question is: How is Your Treasurer Doing? And if you don't know the answer, you should. It is, after all, your money. Not knowing how it's being accounted for is not only bad news for you, but for the entire club.
Absence of Malice
While dishonest investment club treasurers, thankfully, are a rare breed, a few have been known to siphon club funds for themselves. Though you should always be aware of that possibility, a more common occurrence is treasurers who are either afraid to admit that they have questions, or simply don’t know what they don’t know. "These treasurers stumble along, creating all kinds of inequities in their entries," says Gene Rooks, who took over as club treasurer of the Southern Women Investing Money Club in Orlando, Fla., in 2003, and currently serves as one of ICLUBcentral's volunteer club accounting advisers.
