I noted with interest the jailing of investment swindler Bernard Madoff March 12 -- this after he pleaded guilty to all 11 criminal counts against him in what will go down in history as one of the biggest Wall Street scams ever. In court, Madoff described how he defrauded thousands of people out of possibly billions of dollars in a scheme that circled the globe.
While of course this is light years away from anything members of an investment club might experience, it illustrates this point nicely: Not only does each and every member of an investment club have a right to know what the club's treasurer is doing with the club's money, they have a responsibility.
"The club has a responsibility both collectively and individually to make sure that the treasurer is keeping accurate records," says Gene Rooks, who took over as club treasurer of the Southern Women Investing Money Club in Orlando, Fla., in 2003, and currently serves as one of ICLUBcentral's volunteer club accounting advisers. "That's why every single member needs to know what to expect. If your club doesn't recognize -- or if club members choose to ignore -- problem areas, you may find that members will be shortchanged in the allocation of their investment in the club."
