Truth be told, when it comes to most things in life, we operate with this question at the forefront: How is this going to affect me?
This idea first came into my consciousness when I was in college, studying journalism. I remember it as an "ah-ha!" moment. It was in the classroom that I learned something very interesting – and logical -- about the way the human mind operates. We care most about that which affects us, which means the meteorologist at our local TV news station will likely spend more time on the local forecast than he or she will on forest fires taking place on the opposite side of the country. It's not that we don't care about the raging inferno 2,000 miles away – or the people affected. But we have a need to know more about the bad weather that might close our area schools and businesses.
I don’t think of our perspective as awful or selfish, but rather, as a natural consequence to the filter we call our brain. We do, after all, view the world through our own unique pair of binoculars.
