OK, so I'll be the first to admit that, as a teenager, I might have done the very opposite of what my parents wanted me to do . . . more than a time or two. But that's often just a part of growing up and declaring our independence.
That said, what's the strategy when you have teenage or twenty-something kids or grandkids, you'd really like to pass on your knowledge of personal finance and stock market, and you'd really like them to listen? How do you get them to latch on to what you're trying to share, rather than run the other direction, only to have them discover at age 30 or 40 that you really did know what you were talking about?
Some young people, like Kishan Lalla (see previous column, Are You Smarter Than a Tenth Grader?), come by a willingness to learn from other people — yes, even their parents — quite naturally. "Kishan is open to mature subjects — like stocks — and he is willing to listen," says Kim Butcher, an InvestEd '09 attendee and Kishan's mentor.
