Toolkit 6 Tip: Use Debt-to-Equity as a Measure of Company Quality
One new feature of Toolkit 6 is the addition of the Stock Selection Guide of Section 2, Line C, a 10-year review of a company's "% Debt-to-Equity".
The debt-to-equity ratio is a measure of company's financial leverage and is calculated by dividing a company's long-term debt by shareholders' equity. In looking at the company's debt to equity, we can see the proportions in which the company is using debt and equity to finance its growth.
If debt to equity is too high (for most industries, levels above 50% may be cause for concern), or if debt is trending up without corresponding growth in earnings, then ....

Meet the Investor Advisory Service at the 2011 AAII National Investor Conference
Are you attending the American Association of Individual Investors' Investor Conference in Las Vegas this November 2011? If so, you can hear Investor Advisory Service Editor-in-Chief Doug Gerlach present a workshop on the formula that IAS analysts use to pick winning stocks for the newsletter.
The 2011 AAII Investor Conference offers a variety of instruction for all levels of investors, from fine-tuning your strategies and mastering the latest concepts to simply learning more about investing from experts.
The conference will be at the new Cosmopolitan hotel, Thursday, Nov. 10, to Saturday, Nov. 12.
The Investor Advisory Service will also be in attendance, exhibiting in the Expo Hall, and Editor-in-Chief Doug Gerlach will present a workshop on the conference program. Be sure to stop by the IAS booth to say hello!

More Updates to the StockCentral Portfolio Tracker
Our StockCentral team has been busy with enhancements to our Portfolio Tracker.
We have just added several new "views" to the Portfolio Tracker tool, allowing you to see the diversification of your holdings by company size, market capitalization and sector. These are in addition to the Take Stock and Summary views that we have previously released.
These new Diversification views are actually based on reports in our Stock Analyst program, so users of that software should find these new reports to be quite familiar.
These new reports require that you enter details on your holdings, including the date of your original purchase and per-share purchase price. If you have set up portfolios on the site in the past, you should click the Manage Companies link and then Edit to add this information. Note that we don't currently support multiple lot purchases, so you should add entries for each major lot or include your average purchase price and first purchase date in a company's entry.
We'll be adding more views in the coming weeks, so stay tuned!
