Don't Be Swayed by Noise in the Markets

As the September issue of the SmallCap Informer hit the press, the markets and economy were showing signs of relative stability (if not yet displaying signs of out-and-out strength).

Small-cap stocks performed well in August 2012. The Russell 2000 posted a gain of 3.4% for the month, bringing the year-to-date performance of the index to 9.0%. Of course, in the year of a presidential election, markets often tend to rally, as neither party wishes to take a stand that might impair the performance of the markets or anger investors. The market rebounded from its late-summer slump in fine style, and small-cap stocks were included in the rally.

How Do I Rebalance My Mutual Fund Portfolio?

A subscriber wrote the Mutual Fund Informer to ask "Over time, some of the funds that I own in my 401(k) have gone up in value more than others, and some funds have gone down. As a result, the percentages in the various fund categories now vary quite a bit from the original allocation plan that I started using. Should I sell some of the fund shares that have gone up and use the proceeds to buy shares in the funds that have gone down? What is the best approach to use in rebalancing my portfolio?"

Assuming that you have a sound asset allocation plan in place in your portfolio, over time the percentages allocated to various types of assets is likely to shift. This is actually evidence that your selected asset allocation scheme is working — the point of asset allocation is to hold securities or funds that perform differently during different cycles of the domestic economy or according to different global forces.

As you invest regularly in your portfolio, however, these swings in the value of your holdings by class can throw your plans out of kilter. As a result, you must monitor the balance of your holdings regularly and periodically make adjustments. .

For your long-term-oriented retirement portfolio, you probably don’t need to do a close review of your asset allocation plan any more frequently than annually, and you might choose to rebalance only every two or three years.

Changes to IAS Publication Schedule for the Rest of 2012

All Investor Advisory Service subscribers should be aware of the following changes in the publication schedule for the remainder of 2012.

The November 2012 issue will be published one week later than usual, on Friday, November 2, 2012.

Then, due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the December 2012 issue of IAS will be published three days earlier, on Wednesday, November 21, 2012. As a result of the postponement in the publication of the November IAS and the earlier publication of the December issue, there will be no mid-November Interim Update published online as has been our custom in the past.

Finally, our January 2013 issue will be published one week earlier than usual, on Friday, December 21, 2012 (the third Friday of the month). In 2013, our publication dates will revert to the usual "fourth Fridays" of the months.

If that’s too complicated, then please note the following publication schedule for the remainder of the 2012 year:

  • November 2012 issue: November 2, 2012.
  • December 2012 issue: November 21, 2012.
  • January 2013 issue: December 21, 2012.
