Tactics for Managing an Investment Club's Capital Gains

Based on a true story, the film "It Could Happen to You" starred Nicholas Cage and Bridget Fonda as near-strangers who won the lottery, only to have their lives turned upside down and their riches syphoned away. Through the intercession of an undercover news reporter, their lives are restored and a new fortune bestowed upon them, allowing them to pursue their shared dream. And, oh yeah, they fall in love when they jointly bottom out — this is Hollywood, after all — proving that money shouldn't be an obstacle to finding true love or happiness.
One of the apparent truisms that pervades the film is that sudden wealth makes you unhappy. For all of us lottery losers (I mean, "nonwinners"), this thought may perhaps be comforting. Unfortunately, academic research has determined that the notion that money makes you miserable isn't really true. Most lottery winners are perfectly fine, thank you very much. Even if the spike in their wealth causes an uptick in their personal happiness over the short term, gradually winners experience a regression to their "natural" level of happiness.
In an investment club, success in the stock market will bring greater wealth to club members, which can sometimes bring a few headaches. Consider the Dow Janes, an all-women investment club that's been in existence since 2007. A member of the club recently wrote to me to ask what could be done about a particular unwanted side-effect of the group's investing success.
