What's On Doug's Bookshelf?
ICLUBcentral's own Doug Gerlach criss-crosses the country each year visiting investment clubs nationwide and speaking at high-profile investing events. Along the way he manages to read a lot of interesting books about finance and investing. In 2013, Gerlach read a total of 265 books on a variety of topics including Wall Street, investing and global financial trends.
During a recent Lunchtime Learning webinar, Gerlach provided an interesting snapshot and review of John Allen Paulos' book "A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper," building on theories from an earlier book, "Innumeracy: Mathematical Illiteracy and its Consequences." In his book looking at newspaper stories and math concepts, Paulos examines stories that appeared in newspapers and points out some of the glaring problems in them caused by inadvertent distortion, "false precision" in reporting and examples of assumptions and conclusions that have no solid basis. "You can't simplify the market on a daily basis," Gerlach notes, illuminating why newspapers aren't the best guide for daily investing decisions.
